Does the game run slow or choppy on your system? (MAC)

We have noticed a decrease in game performance with Mac OS version 9.0 or greater. This includes all versions of Mac OS X. The slowdown is due to inefficiencies in the video card drivers included with those versions of the Mac OS. All the relevant parties responsible for driver updates have been informed.

3DFX card users should note that 3DFX has gone out of business, however Voodoofiles.com has been hosting many of the drivers on their website. You maybe able to find a driver that will work for your video card there. Blizzard has tested the Voodoo 4/5 PCI v1.0.1 and Voodoo 4/5 PCI v1.1.2 drivers and they appeared to work properly. These drivers support all the Voodoo 5, and Voodoo 4, PCI cards, as well as many of the older Voodoo 3 PCI cards. Please also note that the Carbon versions of Diablo II and Lord of Destruction do not support 3DFX cards at all.

If you have an after market ATi card installed in your computer, we recommend you use the most recent drivers available from ATi for your video card and operating system. To obtain the most recent video card drivers from ATi, please visit their web site here and use the Drivers or Technical Support links there.

With "Classic" versions of the Mac OS, we strongly recommend that you restart with extensions off and remove all the old video card extensions, control panels, and preferences files before you install new driver software. This is done by holding the Shift key down on the keyboard while the computer starts up. You can also use the Extension Manager control panel to create a custom "Diablo II" extension set.

Creating a Diablo II Extension Set:

- Open the Extension Manager control panel. Select the Mac OS Base extension set using the choice bar at the top to the window. Add any video card extensions and control panels you may need to this set and save it as "Diablo II Set".
- Open the Memory control panel. Set Virtual Memory to 128MB or more.
- Restart the computer.
- Hold down the Command and Option keys while the last inits load up at the bottom of the screen as the computer starts up. Keep the keys held down until you are prompted to rebuild the desktop file.
- Allow the computer to rebuild the desktop file.

To optimize game performance, you should also work through the following performance optimization tips.

Part 1: Startup Options Configuration:

- Hold down the Option key while you start Diablo II or Lord of Destruction. You should see a small window appear with startup options for the game.
- Find the Configure Video option and click on it.
- Click on the Rescan Monitors button.
- Select the Software option by clicking on the radio button with that label.
- Click on the right most arrow button in the lower right hand corner of the window.
- Click on the checkbox in the middle of the window which is labeled "Expert Mode." You will see a choice bar appear.
- Click on the choice bar and select the lowest refresh rate listed. Then click on the Test button and wait for a picture to appear on the screen.
- Click the button labeled "OK" at the bottom of the test screen.
- Click on the right most arrow button in the lower right hand corner of the window.
- Repeat steps 6 to 8 once. Then repeat step 9 twice.
- You should be back to the startup options screen. Press the return key or click on the OK button on this screen.

Part 2: In Game Options Configuration:

- Start a Single Player game of Diablo II or Lord of Destruction.
- Press the Esc key once the character appears in town.
- Select the Options menu item.
- Select the Video Options menu item.
