Are you experiencing unrecoverable crashes in Mac OS X? (MAC)

The following troubleshooting steps are intended for Carbon version of Diablo II. If you do not have the Carbon version of Diablo II installed, please use the appropriate patches for a game or expansion available at our Diablo II Patch Information web page. Step 1: Repair file permissions: File permission problems can arise when Mac OS X is updated. This can cause our games not to launch or to unexpectedly quit when certain game features are accessed. Please use the steps below to repair file permission settings on the hard drive you have installed our games on. Also, if you are receiving an "Unrecoverable Error" or any other crash message when logging into a character or game, this can be caused by a file permission issue, particularly when there are multiple User accounts. Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger): - Click on the Finder icon in the Dock. - Open the Applications folder. - Open the Utilities folder. - Double click on the Disk Utility application icon. - Select the hard drive the game is installed on. - Select the Disk First Aid option. - Click on the Repair File Permissions button. Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther): - Click on the Finder icon in the Dock. - Open the Applications folder. - Open the Utilities folder. - Double click on the Disk Utility application icon. - Select the hard drive the game is installed on. - Select the Disk First Aid option. - Click on the Repair File Permissions button. Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar): - Click on the Finder icon in the Dock. - Open the Applications folder. - Open the Utilities folder. - Double click on the Disk First Aid application icon. - Click on the Repair File Permissions button. Step 2: Removing preferences: Mac OS X will automatically generate .plist files in your ~/Library/Preferences/ folder for some of our games. Please use the steps below to remove preferences files for our games before you play again. - Click on the Desktop. - Select the Go To Folder option in the Go menu at the top of the screen. - Type in: ~/Library/Preferences/ - Press the Return key on the keyboard. - Search for any files with the word Blizzard in the title and trash them. - Search for any files with the word Battle.net in the title and trash them. - Search for any files with the game names Diablo in their titles and delete them. Step 3: Driver and software updates: If you have a video related problem which is not corrected by patches to the game, please check with your video card manufacturer for driver updates for your card if it is a made by a third-party company. The latest software updates can include the latest drivers, so it is recommended to have the latest Mac OS X updates by installing all updates from Software Update. Third party sound cards are not officially supported with any of our games. Please use the following steps to set the sound output to built in sound before you play our games. - Click on the Desktop. - Click on the Apple Menu. - Select the System Preferences item. - Click on the Sound icon. - Select the Output option. - Click on one of the Internal Speakers, Built in Sound, or Headphones options. Step 4: Reinstalling the game client: Game files can become corrupted for a variety of reasons. This is commonly caused by popular Disk Repair software which has not been updated to work with the version of the Mac OS which is installed on a computer. However corrupted games files can also be due to the installation of an expansion patch over a game which does not have the expansion installed. The first step in correcting the problem is to remove the game and the preferences file for the game from the hard drive. Be sure you back up any maps, player profiles, or character files you may have created in a Save folder or Maps folder inside the game folder before you remove the game folder from the hard drive. Next, install the game again and install the expansion set for the game if you have it. This has to be done in Mac OS 9.2.2 or Classic Mode for StarCraft, Brood War, Diablo II, and Lord of Destruction. Now you will have to download the patch for the game if you only have the game installed, or download the patch for the expansion if you have the expansion and game installed. Patches are available on our Diablo II Patch Information web page. Step 5: Video settings: If you experience video related problems such as a black screen, or a shifted or clipped game display area, please open the Displays panel in the System Preferences application and refer to the settings listed in the table below. You may have to hold down the Option key to view a complete list of resolutions for your video card and monitor. Default Resolution: 800x600
Color Depth: 256
Refresh Rate: 60 Hz
* 640x480 must also be supported. The game will look for the Primary display by default. The primary display is the one with the menu bar and the Dock on it. If you have multiple displays connected to your system, please turn the computer off and disconnect all the monitors other than the one plugged into the top most expansion slot on your system. If your system has a built in display, disconnect any other displays. Then start the computer again and set the resolution, color depth and refresh rate as described above. If you get a black screen with a game, but hear music or sound playing for the game in the background, please also use the Command M key combination to run the game in a window on the screen. This will allow you to see the game display even when full screen mode is not working properly. Step 6: Removing peripherals: Occasionally USB device chains can experience low power conditions which will freeze input devices on the chain. If you experience a non-responsive mouse cursor or keyboard, please unplug all the USB devices connected to your computer. Then plug the mouse and keyboard into separate USB ports on your computer. Do not use a hub or chain the mouse to the keyboard, monitor or other device. If the cursor or keyboard remain unresponsive, hold the power button down on your computer until it shuts off.
