Are you experiencing crashes when leaving Harrogath in Act V of the Expansion? (PC)
Step 1
Upgrade to the latest version:
You can do this by either connecting to Battle.net or by downloading the patch from the
Blizzard patches page.
Step 2
Make sure the latest video and sound drivers are compatible with the latest version of DirectX:
Contact your video card manufacturer to ensure compatibility if you cannot find the information from the page you downloaded your video drivers. Make sure you have the latest version of
DirectX.
Step 3
Download and install the latest drivers for your sound and video hardware:
This page is designed to help customers troubleshoot video and/or sound problems associated with old or faulty drivers.
If you are planning on updating DirectX as well as the drivers for your sound and video hardware. We suggest installing the update for DirectX first, then the updates for your sound and video hardware.
Steps to identify your DirectX version:
- Click on the
Start button and select
Run. (For Vista Users, press the Windows Key (the key with the Windows logo on your keyboard) + R (at the same time)
- In the
Open: field type in
dxdiag and click the
OK button.
- When the DirectX Diagnostic Tool loads up you will see information about your computer. Near the bottom of the information should be the following field:
DirectX Version: which will list what version you are currently running.
- Check
http://www.microsoft.com/directx/ for the latest version of DirectX and update if necessary*.
*Note: Make sure you have drivers for your sound and video hardware that support the version of DirectX you are going to install. If you are not sure the drivers support the version of DirectX you are going to install consult with the company that built the sound and video hardware for more information. If the hardware came with a computer you bought then contact the computer manufacturer. Check our list of hardware manufactures for contact information

Steps to identify your video driver version:
- Click on the
Start button and select

- Type in

Display tab.
- The version of the driver you have installed should be listed under the
Driver box next to the word

- Click on the

- Type in
dxdiag and click
OK.
- After the
DirectX Diagnostic Tool loads, click on the
Sound tab.
- The version of the driver you have installed should be listed under the
Driver box next to the word
Version.

Step 4
Download and install the latest updates for your motherboard:
Check the motherboard manufacturer's website for updated chipset drivers, first. If you can't find updated drivers at the manufacturer's website, the next two most common locations for chipset drivers are
http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=2 and
http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/.
Step 5
Close background apps:
Windows 95/98/Me:
- Press the
Ctrl,
Alt, and
Delete keys at the same time. A dialog box will display the active programs.
- Close all active programs except
explorer and
systray, one at a time, by selecting each program and clicking the
End Task button.
- Repeat these steps until all programs except
explorer and
systray have been closed.
Windows 2000 users:
You will need to make sure that you are logged in as an administrator and that you have disabled all the non
Default Processes. Please use the link provided to view the list of default processes in Windows 2000, Knowledge Base Article Number (Q263201).
Windows XP:
- Press the
Ctrl,
Alt, and
Delete keys at the same time.
- Select the
Task Manager button.
- Select the
Applications tab.
- Close all active programs, one at a time, by selecting each program and clicking the
End Task button.
- Repeat these steps until all programs have been closed.
- Stop or uninstall any antivirus and/or firewall programs you have have installed.
- Note: If your system does lock up or reboots you will need to contact your computer manufacturer to find out how to close these programs for your system.
- If you system locks up, turn the power off (waiting 10 seconds) then back on.
Step 6
Windows updates:
Make sure your version of Windows has all the latest updates by checking
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
Step 7
Disable the sound card:
- Right click on
My Computer and select
properties
- (Windows 2000/XP only) Click on the
Hardware tab
- Click on
Device manager
- (Windows 95/98/ME/NT only) Click on the
Device Manager tab
- Expand the
Sound,
video, and
game controllers branch
- Select the sound card and click the
Properties button
- Disable the device from the active profile
- Click
OK
- Try the game again
If you still encounter lockups, try to use a waypoint after the first zone outside the barbarian city of Harrogath. Any waypoint after the Frigid Highlands will work.
